Unit 48 Brief 4 - Rather Be Mixing and Mastering

Mixing
Firstly, I selected the project Rather Be. Then I coloured the tracks and limited them and I cut any
section of the track that had to no sound with the scissors tool and coloured.

Grouping

I did this for strings, synths and piano and vocals.

  Strings FX Channel

To add the tracks to the FX Channel I had to add each track that I wanted to group to the string FX bus.

EQ

I then added EQ to the a few tracks including the synths and strings and piano and drums. I increased the high frequencies to make them sound crisp.

Effects

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:11tilwel:Desktop:Rather Be M&M:Screen Shot 2017-05-25 at 12.48.48.pngI added reverb to the vocals via RoomWorks. This simulates space and helps the ambience of the track.

Mastering

I had to lower the individual sound levels of each track to ensure the track didn’t clip when I put the stereo out on 0db.

Stereo Out level 0db, which is a radio, edit level. This is done so the listener doesn’t have to adjust their volume for each song.

I then added MultibandCompressor to by clicking the ‘e’ on the stereo out, circled below. The multiband compressor compresses every track instead of individually.

I then exported my track at high quality. I used a .wav file and CD quality 44.1kHx sample rate and 16 bit, which is CD quality.

Unit 48 Brief 4 - Mastering Stick Together

SOUNDCLOUD : https://soundcloud.com/user-4824654/mixing-and-mastering-final-tilly-wellard

Mastering

Firstly, I exported my mixing track. This is shown below. I used the track locators to select the whole track for start to finish. I then exported the file using audio mix down.
The settings of the track were set to gain a high quality audio track. I used .wav file and CD quality 44.1kHz sample rate and 16 bit.

I then added the track to a new Cubase project and imported the track into the project.

I then clicked the ‘e’ and added multiband compressor onto the audio file.

Multiband Compressor
after editing. This compresses the whole track instead of having to compress each individual track on its own.

Second Master Method

Firstly, I opened the mixer window.

Description: Macintosh HD:Users:11tilwel:Documents:6 Screenshots:Mastering Screenshots:Screen Shot 2017-05-11 at 13.03.54.png

I then located the stereo output channel. This channel includes all tracks from the project and is a master control for all the tracks.  I ensured the stereo out was at 0db as this is a traditional radio edit level.

I clicked the e to add the effects and added multiband compressor.

By mastering the track it makes it sound more professional and clear.
